What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a therapeutic process that involves entering a light trance, typically induced by a therapist, to facilitate communication with the subconscious mind.

The subconscious functions as the brain’s operating system, housing our beliefs, habits, perspectives, expectations, memories, and fears. While the conscious mind handles immediate thoughts and decisions, the subconscious governs approximately 95% of our reactions, behaviours, and actions.

Access to the subconscious is typically limited, but Hypnosis serves as a powerful tool to bridge this gap.

As a form of psychological therapy, Hypnosis can help reshape how you think, feel, and act. In this state of focused concentration, you become less aware of your surroundings and more receptive to suggestions. These suggestions are carefully designed by the therapist to guide you away from unhelpful beliefs and toward more beneficial patterns of thought and behaviour.

Hypnosis works at the core of issues, often delivering rapid and lasting change. It can address a wide range of concerns, from simple habits like smoking, overeating, and difficulty sleeping to more complex psychological challenges.

When delivered by a qualified practitioner, modern Hypnosis is entirely safe, comfortable, and deeply relaxing.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a type of psychological therapy that employs Hypnosis to treat various mental and physical health conditions. It can also be used to modify behaviours and habits.

In some cases, therapists integrate Hypnosis with other treatments—such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—to enhance their effectiveness, even if they don’t specifically label the treatment as Hypnotherapy.

Self-Hypnosis is another approach where individuals learn to hypnotize themselves, empowering them to manage stress, improve focus, or address specific challenges independently.

Common Misconceptions About Hypnosis

Hypnosis is often misunderstood. Here are some key points to clarify:

  • You remain in control at all times. Hypnosis works with your will, not against it. You will only respond to suggestions you are comfortable with.

  • You are aware of your surroundings. Although deeply relaxed, you always know where you are and what is happening.

  • Anyone can be hypnotized. As long as you are open and willing, hypnosis can work for you.

  • Hypnosis feels familiar. Hypnotic states are natural and similar to moments of focused relaxation, such as:

    1. Watching television.

    2. Driving on autopilot.

These dreamlike states are pleasant and occur naturally in daily life.

What to Expect in a Hypnotherapy Session

Contrary to the dramatic portrayals in stage performances, Hypnotherapy is a professional, therapeutic practice. Sessions typically last between 10 and 90 minutes and involve sitting comfortably while listening to your therapist or a recorded audio.

A session often begins with an induction procedure, during which the therapist speaks softly and slowly, encouraging you to focus your attention and relax. They may describe calming imagery—like lying on a beach or another scene that you find soothing.

Once you are in a sufficiently deep hypnotic state, the therapist will make suggestions aimed at fostering positive change. These may include helping you visualize yourself handling situations with confidence or overcoming specific challenges. Your mind, in its hypnotic state, can accept these suggestions more easily, bypassing excessive self-criticism or doubt.

Importantly, you remain in control throughout the session and can choose not to follow any suggestion if it feels uncomfortable.

Are There Any Side Effects?

When performed by a qualified professional, hypnotherapy has minimal side effects. You may feel drowsy immediately after a session, but this typically subsides quickly. A competent therapist will monitor your progress, assess the effectiveness of the treatment, and make adjustments if needed.

As with any form of therapy, it is important to avoid overdependence and aim for self-sufficiency.

Hypnotherapy should serve as a tool to empower you to handle challenges on your own.
